February 2009 - AGOCO - UKTI "Doing Business in Libya - The Second Step"
UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) is the British Government organisation that helps UK companies effectively export goods and services overseas and assists foreign companies to establish businesses in the UK.
Early in 2008, UKTI had organised a 3–location event, in England and Scotland, to highlight the opportunities in Libya for companies involved in the oil & gas industry. This developed a huge interest amongst the companies plus a request for more information on how to do business. Consequently UKTI, in conjunction with the Libyan British Business Council in London, organised events in London, Manchester and Aberdeen to provide the information requested in the feedback from the first events.
The “Second Step” included case studies from several British companies that have first hand experience in winning and executing contracts in Libya for Libyan companies. Nearly 250 representatives from 200 companies attended over the 3 locations and heard the diverse experiences from many well-known organisations such as: WS Atkins; Building Design Partnership; British Arab Commercial Bank; Ernst & Young; LCM (Simon Berdai); Denton Wilde Sapte; Emergency Response Services Ltd.; Sureclean Ltd.
The panel was chaired by Sir Richard Dalton – previously British Ambassador to Libya and included Richard Quin-Stanley from UKTI, Saleh Mabrouk A. Rahuma from the NOC, Ibrahim Hafez and Abdul Majed Al Mayet from the Libyan Business Council. The topics covered included tax, banking and legal matters as well as cultural, commercial and logistical details associated with the supply of goods and services to Libyan government and private companies.
